| Deleting files |
If you delete files using operating system methods, the data is not really deleted. Only a reference to the file is removed. The contents remain available until another file takes its place. Anyone, who uses the appropriate software tool, can very easily restore data that has been removed in this way.
Using various functions, the shredder deletes files completely and permanently. A context menu can be created in Windows Explorer with which you can comfortably delete files and directories. ArchiCrypt Shredder itself offers a file manager, which provides several clever additional possibilities (freely definable favourites register, hard drive menu, plus the means of quickly accessing important system functions). Simply drag & drop files or directories to the delete field and the files will be securely deleted. In addition, the shredder’s Secure Zones provide a further absolutely unique possibility for securely deleting files. See also Secure Zones instructions.

| Free space/ Cluster tips / File names |
The free space is the area of a hard drive that the system displays as available (not used). In reality, however, data from the files that the operating system has “deleted” is actually there. If you occasionally delete sensitive data using system functions (Windows Explorer or other file managers), you should also clean the free space. Even file names of deleted data can be revealing and divulge information. The shredder removes every trace. Cluster tips, space at the end of a file, in which sensitive data might be found, are critical because they are normally not deleted. The shredder helps here, too. If the free space is cleaned when the operating system is running, it has to share resources with the rest of the system. In order to clean much more quickly, the shredder can carry out this task even before the system is started. Some files cannot be deleted when the system is running, but here again, using its own processes, the shredder also deletes the files before the system is started. (Note: The operating system already does have a function for noting such files before the system starts up. However, the deletion itself takes place through the system and, therefore, with unsecure methods. In contrast to normal deletion tools, which use this unsecure method, the shredder takes care of this task itself.)

| Special folders |
| The operating system automatically places a lot of information on your data media: temporary files, lists of recently used files, etc. ArchiCrypt Shredder makes it possible for you to delete the contents of special folders securely. In order to offer as much flexibility as possible, you can accept any directories in lists and permanently delete the content of the lists, if you need to.

| Online traces |
| Browsers save a lot of data during every online session. Among other things, entire page contents with photos and videos, but also lists of sites viewed, passwords you have entered, information from forms and much more. It doesn’t always make sense to have all this data on your own computer. Support is for Internet Explorer, Netscape, Opera und Firefox.

| Plug-ins |
ArchiCrypt Shredder’s functions can be expanded further with the help of plug-ins, without needing to change the program. Plug-ins carry out tasks like removing traces from applications or saving important data. Delete traces, for example, like most recently opened documents or programs, temporary files, waste basket contents, traces from WinZIP, WinRAR, Kazaa, eDonkey, eMule, deletedOutlook Express emails, Windows Media Player, RealOne Player, and many more. Save your Internet Explorer settings, make a back-up copy of Outlook Express and many more. Shredder provides more than 70 plug-ins in the full version.

| Swap file |
The operating system places portions of list memory content in swap files. It is easy to understand that as a result content from your hard drive is included, which you don’t necessarily want to have placed there. The shredder is far ahead of the competition here, too. While they rely on the operating system to overwrite PORTIONS !! of the swap files in a one time pass of zeros, the shredder relies rather on its own methods and deletes swap files using approved standards.

| Deleting partitions and hard drives |

If you sell a computer or hard drive, you want to be sure that all sensitive data is really deleted. ArchiCrypt Shredder can create a DBAN boot diskette with which you can securely delete almost any hard drive, regardless of its operating system. If you have a burn program that is able to burn ISO images, you can also create a bootable CD.
A big thank you to Mr. Darik Horn for the kind permission to include DBAN as an additional tool with ArchiCrypt Shredder!
More information can be found at DBAN.sourceforge.net
